JP's Bio

I have been a competitive cyclist and multisport athlete for 25 years. I started as a competitive inline speed skater in the late 80’s. I would use cycling as my cross training activity. I was hooked and fascinated by the fitness level of cyclist. I admired the ability to push the limits and still have enough in the tank to make a bike go close to 40 mph after 4 hours of racing to win the final sprint. My speed skating days landed me in the heat of World Team Qualification competition in Colorado Springs, CO at the US Olympic Training Center. I was a guest several years in a row for training and competition. This helped lay a foundation for my quest to push myself to the limits. It also spurred my interest toward a degree in Athletic Training from The University of Kansas in 1996. My love of sports allowed me to take a position as an Athletic Training for various college level teams in the 90’s. The University of Kansas, Northwest Missouri State University, The University of Nebraska, and a teaching position at The University of South Florida wrapped up my time as an Athletic Trainer.  The team’s, Athletes  and coaches during those times allowed me to see how a true team approach to an Athlete’s training can lead to Conference, Regional , and National Championships.

Since my Athletic Training day’s I have owned my own Medical Sales Business in Tampa and Kansas City. I am involved in Sales and Marketing for Bikesource in KC. I will be going to the Specialized BG Fit School in the Winter of 2012. I am also the owner of Shores Sports, which is a Sports Marketing and Cycling Ride Guide Service in Kansas City. We are associated with SPIN! Pizza, www.spinpizza.com as the official ride guide company for the past 4 years. We advocate cycling for all abilities in the KC Metro area and promote safety, fitness, and rules of the road for riding in groups on the road. I have been involved as a major supporter and advisor for the Livestrong Tour de BBQ in KC the last 3 years.  This ride has become one of the most popular cycling events for the Fall in a short period of existence. We had over 2000 cyclist participate in this year’s edition.

My multi-sport career has evolved in several disciplines. I have competed in various disciplines of cycling such as Road, Criterium, cyclocross, and Mountain Bike racing. I have competed in every distance discipline of the Triathlon world, except a Full Ironman (which I will be racing Ironman Texas in May of 2012). I have had experience coaching your everyday cyclist to a 4 Pereson team for the 2003 Race Across America, in which I was the crew chief for 12 individuals. We finished in 7 days and on the third spot of the 4 Person Category Podium. It was one of the best cycling and life experiences I have ever encountered.  I spent 7 years racing in Florida and was on teams that won the Cat. 4 and Cat. 3 mens Florida Points Series.  I moved back to Olathe, KS in 2006 and have worked hard to become one of the top 35 plus all around cyclist in the area.

In 2010 I qualified for and raced The Mountain Bike National Championships in Sol Vista, CO. Finishing 16th in my age group category. This past year I was the Kansas Mountain Bike State Champion for my age group and finished second in the State Age Group Road Race. Both events were held on back to back days, which provided a pretty big challenge. But, making the podium on both days was truly a highlight of my season.

I have been a consistent Podium finisher in 2011, results can be found on my blog http://jpsbikelife.blogspot.com/ along with my weekly updates and racing reports. I enjoy the challenge of every event, but enjoy the process of working and changing my body in order to have the best outcome possible.

Testimonial

JP also has a way of pushing you to get better, and you don’t even realize you’re being pushed. My time riding and training with JP have been an invaluable part of my cycling. I have become stronger, faster, better educated and as a result of all those things I have a lot more fun, while representing cyclist in a positive light.
